Spiritual Direction

Picture
"Spiritual direction has helped me understand my spirituality, and I can now articulate that spirituality to others. I'm more able to "be myself" in prayer. I find this self-understanding helpful as I practice my faith in community with others. Also, as a result of spiritual direction I'm now more aware of the uniqueness of each individual's relationship to God."
-- R.S.

My vision is to engage others through spiritual direction, coaching, teaching and preaching in ways that provoke them to deepen their connection with God and with others and to live into the person God has called and created them to be.
The initial session is free of charge.

What is spiritual direction?

Spiritual direction is holy listening.  I listen to the client.  I invite them to listen more deeply to what is going on within them and around them.  Most of all, spiritual direction involves listening for the voice of God. I consider spiritual direction a carving out of sacred space to journey with someone as they deepen their intimacy with and attentiveness to God’s presence in their life.  The Holy Spirit is the ultimate director. I seek merely to cultivate a space that is safe, peaceful and hospitable since, as Parker Palmer writes, “the soul speaks its truth only under quiet, inviting, and trustworthy conditions.”[i]

Who can benefit from spiritual direction?

I am open to direction with people of varying faith traditions and backgrounds.  I have the most experience in the area of vocational discernment and life transitions, as well as directing those within the LGBTQIA community.  I appreciate opportunities to lead group spiritual direction.  Group direction was the topic of my final paper for my direction certification

What does Spiritual Direction look like?

Spiritual direction is generally most fruitful by meeting for a one-hour session once monthly.  I welcome in-person and Zoom sessions.  Cost is negotiable (depending on financial circumstances) with a recommended starting rate of $40.  If desired by a client, I can merge coaching with spiritual direction, particularly as regards vocational discernment.

One-on-one Direction

In my direction style, I periodically ask questions or reflect back on what I am hearing and noticing from the client.  If a client is seeking guidance in spiritual practices, I am able to recommend different forms of prayer and different ways of engaging with scripture.

Group Direction

I especially appreciate opportunities to lead group spiritual direction.  Group direction was the topic of my final paper for my direction certification.

"Tracey's facilitation of the Lent and Advent small groups helped me cope with the isolation of the pandemic and encouraged me to speak my mind about my anxieties. The safe space she created in the discussion allowed me to trust the group with my negative emotions while responding to her guidance. Tracey's incorporation of introspection and group input made me better aware of my spiritual needs, which has continued to foster my spiritual growth."
